Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) provides holistic, country-driven support to accelerate the development, deployment and transfer of locally relevant climate and clean energy technologies. The Center provides incubation, capacity building and financing to Kenyan entrepreneurs developing innovative solutions in renewable energy, water management and agribusiness. KCIC is an initiative supported by the World Bank's infoDev and the first in a global network of CICs launched by infoDev's Climate Technology Program (CTP). The Center is funded by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Application are open throughout the year and submitted online. The Evaluation criteria is as follows:
- Eligibility – does the business idea fall within the scope of the CIC’s three thematic areas?
- Feasibility – is the business idea feasible from a technical and business perspective?
- Impact – will the business idea make a significant impact on the community, women and the environment?
- Progress to date – has the applicant taken key first steps to move the idea forward?
All applications are reviewed and the response sent within three weeks. In some cases, one-on-one meetings are necessary where additional information is required.
When an entrepreneur is admitted into KCIC, a letter of agreement is signed for an incubation programme for a maximum period of 12 months.
In the course of 12 months the progress of the company is tracked through monthly reports and meetings with Business Analysts.
On a need basis, extension for support beyond the 12 months will be provided.
The incubates depending on the level of business, are graduated. Upon graduation, you become a member of the KCIC Alumni Network. This network is meant to strengthen the relationship between KCIC and its successfully graduated startups with an aim to keep the spirit of entrepreneurship alive.
