The Role of Innovations in Fighting Climate Change 

Innovations are and will continue to be essential in the fight against climate change. Not only are they necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (mitigation), but they are also needed to deal with the negative effects of climate change and/or exploit any positive ones (adaptation). As the future of global development is threatened by climate change- and its effects are already being felt in some of the most vulnerable communities on earth, innovation is required in both areas.

The journey of an entrepreneur

Any entrepreneur will tell you that the journey to establishing a profitable company is never easy. One requires self-discipline and determination to make things work. Some people are lucky to succeed without a struggle the first time, for others it becomes one long painful journey.  

For those who abandoned their careers in formal employment to delve into entrepreneurship, you have to adapt to long weeknights and almost no pay until the business picks up. Walking away from a stable career to self-employment can be dicey but fulfilling in the long run.

In July this year, I had the pleasure of visiting Solinc East Africa Limited and I must say I was intrigued by the number of women involved in the assembly of solar panels. Trained and skilled women going about their duties, from the cutting, smoldering, stringing, assembling and testing of the products. This is the kind of spirit that needs to be encouraged, for women to thrive in the technical sectors.

The Climate Change Act 2016 Policy Brief

The Climate Change Act 2016, was a timely law that was passed at a period when Kenya is experiencing the adverse effects of climate change. The Act was passed is May 2016, although the regulations operationalizing the Act are yet to be developed. There has been a cyclical series of drought in Kenya which is a clear indication of the effects of climate change. Currently about two million Kenyans are suffering the effects of drought. Red Cross Kenya has indicated that unless the government is able to avert the continued effects of the drought then the number is expected to go higher.
